"A tigress should have fur"

The artist refers to the so-called “womb envy” theory — a reversed lens in relation to Freud’s psychoanalytic concept. If classical interpretation spoke of “penis envy,” here the emphasis shifts: fear of the womb, fear of the capacity to give birth, fear of autonomous bodily power becomes a source of the demonization of women. The womb turns into a monster — frightening, uncontrollable, demanding suppression. From this fear grow prohibitions, taboos, and violence.

"A Tigress Should Have Fur" is a manifesto for the right to remain unpolished. For the right to anger as a form of self-care. For the right to one’s body — without shame and without permission.

BIO
Kristina Burbela (b. 1992, Sasovo, Russia) is a contemporary feminist artist based in Belgrade, Serbia.

Her work has been presented at the ArtNeuroVerse Biennale at Sviva Art Space (Tel Aviv, 2024) and featured in institutional and independent contexts, including a solo exhibition and residency at Nova Riznica Balcan - European Art Community of Montenegro (Budva, 2024) and Inclusion of Life at the Zverev Center for Contemporary Art (Moscow, 2021).

Through painting, embroidery, installations, and object‑based works, Burbela focuses on feminist, socially engaged art, examining female corporeality, resistance to patriarchy, and the effects of systemic and political violence. Drawing on her academic training (BA and MA in Law) and practice as a litigation lawyer, she addresses how bodies — particularly women’s bodies — become sites of control and contestation, and how art can function as a form of resistance and empowerment.

Her ongoing work also explores neurodivergence and mental health, shaped by her own late diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and ADHD. Open about her experience, she advocates for greater awareness of neurodiversity and inclusivity as part of her broader commitment to questioning normative structures.

ARTIST STATEMENT

In my practice, I explore the tension between vulnerability and defiance through the prism of my own body and mind. I focus on feminist, socially engaged themes — examining female corporeality, the systemic and political violence inflicted on woman, and the ways art can become a site of resistance and empowerment. Grounded in a multidisciplinary perspective shaped by my legal education (BA and MA in Law) and eight years of practice as a litigation lawyer, my work interrogates how bodies — particularly women’s — become contested territories under systems of control.

Over time, my practice has evolved into a deeply personal yet universal investigation of the fragmented self, informed by experiences of depression, neurodivergence, and self‑therapy. My late diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and ADHD has opened neuropsychology as both a subject and a language for my work, and reinforced my commitment to advocating for awareness of neurodiversity and inclusivity as part of my broader critique of normative structures.

I work across diverse media — painting, embroidery, ceramics, assemblage, photography, and installation — combining concise visual language, sharp material symbolism, and activist undertones. Recently, I have focused on exploring the gaps in women’s healthcare and the systemic neglect of women‑specific conditions.

I aim to create works that are both provocative and deeply intimate, confronting viewers with what is often hidden or ignored: women’s pain, fractured psyches, quiet battles for the right to be free. Ultimately, my art is a manifesto of female resistance — a refusal to conform to predetermined categories of “normal,” “healthy,” or “feminine,” and an invitation to radically rethink these concepts.
